Day 1 • Friday
U.S. / Lima, Peru

We fly to Lima, Peru , and transfer to our hotel. (D Aloft)

Days 2 & 3 • Saturday & Sunday
Iquitos / Explorama Lodge

We fly to Iquitos, meet our guide and board the boat that takes us to our lodge, arriving at Explorama Lodge in time for lunch. We stay here two nights. We’ll walk in the forest, and on Day 3 we hike the spectacular Bushmaster Trail. More than 300 species of trees have been identified in just a single hectare. Along the way we’ll visit a Yagua village, where our guide tells us about the history and culture of the tribe. This is the time to try out our bartering skills, as the Yagua people always offer a wealth of handicrafts made from the natural resources of the rainforest. After lunch at the lodge, we visit the Yanamono Clinic. We also see a riverside farm, where the villagers grow sugar cane and raise cattle and water buffalos. (B,L,D Daily)

Days 4 & 5  • Monday & Tuesday
Explornapo Lodge

We take a boat ride into the Napo River, the largest of the Peruvian tributaries and after arriving at ExplorNapo Lodge take a walk in the rainforest. After dark we embark on a short boat ride up the Sucusari River. In the morning, you may join our guides for an early bird walk or boat ride. On Tuesday we walk the trail to the Canopy Walkway, an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of our expedition. Wooden steps take us from the forest floor to the first of many suspended pathways and platforms supported by rope and cable. We ascend the walkway to a height of more than ten stories, and eventually emerge above the seemingly endless canopy. We spend our entire morning in the canopy. Then, depending on conditions, we may investigate the medicine trail to learn about plants and their uses in the Indians’ pharmacopoeia or travel through the flooded forest to learn how species adapt to periodic submerging by water. We may also walk along the Lindero Tambo, a wide trail displaying the opportunism of second growth forest. (B,L,D Daily)

Day 6  • Wednesday
Explornapo Lodge / Ceiba Tops

We explore one of the most interesting habitats in the Amazon, a blackwater lake, and search the vegetation surrounding the lake for primitive-looking birds called hoatzins. After lunch, we visit a local shaman and the ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden. Here, plants are grown in a protected environment for use in local medicine and healing ceremonies, as well as for scientific study. We then travel by boat to Ceiba Tops Lodge. (B,L,D)

Days 7 & 8 • Thursday & Friday
Ceiba Tops

We have two days of activities, joining our guide for a jungle hike to visit the immense ceiba tree for which the lodge is named. We take a boat ride to a nearby lake to see giant water lilies, and pink and gray river dolphins cavorting in the shallows. We may stop and throw a hook or two overboard to catch some piranhas. We’ll visit a Ribereño village, where we are met by the kids for a visit to their school. If you’re game, you may join the village in a soccer match. We’ll have opportunities for hikes in the rainforest and for nighttime excursions. Our comfortable lodge has a pool and hammock shelter. (B,L,D Daily)

Days 9 & 10 • Saturday & Sunday
Ceiba Tops / Iquitos / Lima / U.S.

We board our boat and return to Iquitos, continuing to the airport to fly to Lima. After lunch at a distinctive local restaurant, we tour Lima, seeing the Plaza Mayor and Cathedral among other highlights.
